Alternate Media follows our lead

Now that millions have seen the true colors of the Komen Foundation Following its withdrawal of funding from Planned Parenthood I'm posting a selection of our articles on "PINK" from over the years.

After 20+ years of PINK there is no cure. And there is little aimed at prevention and different screening and treatment options that may be better than what if offered and supported by Komen.

I applied one year for a grant to do education and was denied.  I take it that my focus to help women learn about options was not on the agenda for Brinker.

This also says too that the Pink Lid campaign from General Mills ignored a request for a grant from the 501c3 non profit that sponsors this blog.

I started educating in earnest against the lineal mind set of breast cancer care and lack of sure in the early 90s.

The fact that Komen backed mammography screening was advised against in the early 70s by an expert in radiation effects is also quite unknown. It was opposed because it was expected to increase the risk of breast cancer, which it has done.

Now with the outrage and backpedaling from Komen on awards to Planned Parenthood, mostly effecting poor women, Alternet has picked up on some of what we have been saying for decades.

Donations to our 501c3 are welcome.

The New View for 2012

For about two decades I have been writing and education about thermography as a better and safer screening method for breast cancer.

The two best reasons are that it does not expose you to unnecessary radiation and it detects 10 years earlier than x-ray.

This article may help you have a better view and also worth getting a copy to your health care provider.

Sadly I have learned that in some radiology practices they will not allow ultrasound unless you have had a prior mammogram.

Get the facts and take a stand for your best health.

Excerpt from a clinical article highlighting the facts about thermography -

  • Breast thermography has undergone extensive research since the late 1950's.

  • Over 800 peer-reviewed studies on breast thermography exist in the index-medicus literature.

  • In this database, well over 300,000 women have been included as study participants.

  • The numbers of participants in many studies are very large -- 10K, 37K, 60K, 85K …

  • Some of these studies have followed patients up to 12 years.

  • Strict standardized interpretation protocols have been established for over 20 years.

  • Breast thermography has an average sensitivity and specificity of 90%.

  • An abnormal thermogram is 10 times more significant as a future risk indicator for breast cancer than a first order family history of the disease.

  • A persistent abnormal thermogram caries with it a 22x higher risk of future breast cancer.

  • An abnormal infrared image is the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer.

  • Breast thermography has the ability to detect the first signs that a cancer may be forming up to 10 years before any other procedure can detect it.

  • Research has shown that breast thermography significantly augments the long-term survival rates of its recipients by as much as 61%.

  • When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.
If you would like a complete copy of the article please contact us.

PINKTOBER

When I read last month that the Komen Foundation was pinkwashing a perfume I just thought, "What now?" According to Breast Cancer Action this perfume is a chemical soup of toxic substances that are linked with cancer. You can decide for your self, but I support raising a stink! Another taboo topic from Komen is BREAST CANCER PREVENTION. And another is BPA. And yet another is THERMOGRAPHY. Here's a comment from a breast cancer survivor about thermography. She commented on a report that breast cancer survivors need ongoing mammograms. More mammograms = more breast cancer.

Where I live the rural hospital doctors do not want to learn anything new according to the administrator, so women in this area will not be able to have the best care. It is no different for men because I have been educating against PSA for at least a decade.
I am a breast cancer survivor and I will NEVER have another mammogram. It did not find my tumor the first time(I did) so I do not have any confidence it would again. Instead I have opted for thermography, which is safer and painless. As I continuously work to detox my breast from the effects of radiation, I can actually see the improvements on a thermograph since therms can see the physiological changes in breasts. This is especially helpful for women like me who have denser breasts. It is time to stop this nonsense that themography is not a viable way to determine possible breast cancers. It is cheap and painless, and if more women had access, we would save a lot more lives than mammos do, which are also damaging to the breast. The only reason thermography is not a standard of care is because we have no insurance codes for it, thanks to extensive lobbying by the mammography industry who continue to falsely claim therms are unreliable. Any diagnostic test is only as reliable as the person who interprets it. Obviously, the tech who read my mammogram was not reliable. So why isn't anyone using the stats for all these missed tumors when they laud mammos? These are our breasts. WE should have the right to choose. If the medical community really cares about women's lives, they would fight to make thermography a standard of care. Then we would really save lives. I agree and you should too, it detects 10 years earlier and does not raise your risk of breast cancer.

Does Going Pink Lead to "The Cure"?

Real questions do need to be asked about pink products and real progress in prevention and cure of breast cancer.
Back in March, BCA re-launched the Think Before You Pink® blog to provide information and resources for those interested in shifting the dominant breast cancer narrative. One of our goals was to provide concrete tools that would help people start conversations with their friends, family and communities. As a result, I am excited to announce that we are finishing a “first draft” of our brand-new Think Before You Pink® toolkit. We’ll be offering a sneak peek next week, so stay tuned!

As a lead-in to the initial release of our toolkit, we thought that it would be interesting to revisit our campaign’s best known resource – our critical questions. We created these questions in response to the rise of breast cancer related cause marketing and the lack of transparency about how the generated revenue is spent.

In the years since we’ve started our campaign, we’ve seen a lot of changes: a number of organizations have adapted our questions, mainstream news outlets have reported on the unregulated (and sometimes problematic) use of the pink ribbon, and many companies have even started to disclose more information about their “breast cancer awareness” campaigns.

However, there’s still much work to be done.

The first of our questions is: How much money actually goes toward breast cancer programs and services?

In 2009, the Boston Globe ran an article with the following information:

“Research [has shown] that 79 percent of consumers would likely switch to a brand that supports a cause, all other things being equal. People want to buy from companies that appear to do good deeds. In one test conducted by Cone and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, shampoo aligned with a cause saw a 74 percent sales increase over the same brand without a cause.”

Donations to breast cancer organizations still pale in comparison to profits. Just last year, Reebok marketed an entire line of pink ribbon apparel and accessories, with prices ranging from $50-$100. However, they set a “cap” on the proceeds that they would donate to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade: $750,000. One wonders how much money they made by “linking” themselves to the breast cancer epidemic.

Similarly, Yoplait requires participants in its “Save Lids to Save Lives” campaign to either mail lids to the company or enter a code online to donate a whopping 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Why not donate a significant portion of overall sales instead? Hmm.

It gets worse: a quick Google search yields a number of pink items without any apparent connection to breast cancer organizations at all.

These promotions are successful because people want to help end the breast cancer epidemic. They want action steps – and there are few provided.

With our advocacy and education work, we aim to provide more options.

Big Insurance and Health Care Control

This is certainly a telling revelation.  And if you've been following Natural Health News and Creating Health Institute you've been well aware for decades that Big Insurance does control the health care delivery system.

Certainly it controls the fact that unless you pay on your own, you won't get thermography, the earlier detection system fro breast cancer by a decade.   It certainly limits your access to care of your choice, even natural health care options.

While this article refers to breast cancer therapy, please understand that Big Insurance has its greedy fingers in every health care diagnosis.

It also is chafing at the bit to control the new and hybrid health care approach, scathingly referred to as "integrative", "complementary", "alternative", "holistic", and even the newly created form called "naturopathic medicine" (not the real naturopathy of my work since the late 60s and that many of several of my colleagues).

And you can be sure this control will have nothing to do to control health care costs and improve delivery.  It will surely aim to lower reimbursement rates and more out of pocket costs for you.

Insurance affects breast cancer therapy

HOUSTON, April 29 (UPI) -- Breast cancer therapy is affected by where a woman lives and whether certain treatment is included in Medicare reimbursement, U.S. researchers say.

Dr. Benjamin D. Smith of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and colleagues used Medicare data for 26,163 women with localized breast cancer who had undergone surgery and radiation therapy from 2001 to 2005.

Smith says they focused on intensity-modulated radiation therapy -- a radiation delivery technique that modulates the radiation to maximize the dose of radiation to the tumor while minimizing the dose to adjacent normal tissues, reducing radiation side effects.

The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that billing for intensity-modulated radiation therapy in regions of the country where local Medicare carriers covered intensity-modulated radiation, was more than five times higher than in regions where it was not covered.

The average cost of radiation within the first year of diagnosis was $7,179 without intensity-modulated radiation therapy and $15,230 with intensity-modulated radiation therapy, Smith says.

The study authors conclude the data "suggest that with respect to breast radiation therapy, much of the variation in cost can be directly attributed to inconsistent treatment definitions and reimbursement rates authorized by Medicare and its intermediaries."

NEW - How much pink turns into green?

Looks as if some people are catching on, says Komen Foundation rated only as a B+ which means much less than 75% of donations are used for goals.  A pretty high adminsitrative rate if you ask me, when 7% should be the target.

and

"I don't think people understand the lack of progress"
The stark reality is that in the 26 years since the campaign began, deaths from breast cancer have dropped only slightly — about 2% per year, starting in 1990. According to the National Breast Cancer Coalition in Washington, D.C., 117 women in the U.S. died of breast cancer every day in 1991; today that number is 110.

Just the other day I was out shopping about 80 miles from where I live. I was on a mission as I was looking for some specific items.Every turn I made up another aisle was a woman talking on a cell phone.

Exasperated, I finally had had enough and when I went on yet another aisle in yest anotehr store I yelled out " Not you too!" This woman was no more than a foot from me chatting on her cell phone, holding it between her ear and shoulder.

I looked her straight in the eye and said, "Don't you know cell phones are linked to breast and thyroid cancer, and can cause heart disease?"

In a quick, and all too common reply, she said, "That hasn't been scientifically proven."

My answer was, "Yes it has, since the 1940s!"

Of course too few know the real risk of cell phones and WIFI, but the cellular providers do, and so do the scientists.

Even more amazing was when, while channel flipping, I heard Dr. OZ tell poeple that you have to shield your thyroid when you get ANY x-ray (even mammogram) or you will be at risk for thyroid cancer, because x-ray is cumulative. And, YES, this means that when you opt for radiation treatment if you have breast cancer you can get thyroid cancer and heart failure.  Just something we have been teaching at CHI for decades.

Now that this cat is out of the mainstream bag, ask about options to give you better and earlier screening and least risk of more cancer.

What you may not know about breast cancer

Eli Lilly is Milking Cancer!

Eli Lilly is now the sole manufacturer of rBGH — the artificial growth hormone that’s linked to breast cancer.

They also make breast cancer drugs.

Reducing the risk of breast cancer requires understanding and eliminating its causes. Pinkwashers are companies that claim to care about breast cancer but make or sell products that are linked to the disease. rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) is one of those products.

Eli Lilly is a pharmaceutical company that claims to “care for our communities.” But the company is responsible for the cancer and infertility causing DES (diethylstilbestrol), for the illegal marketing of the schizophrenia drug Zyprexa and for the illegal marketing of its osteoporosis drug Evista as a breast cancer “preventive.”

And now it’s Eli Lilly & rBGH.

The Connection Between rBGH and Breast Cancer

Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH), also known as Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin (rBST), is injected into cows so they will produce more milk. Research suggests that a number of health concerns, including breast cancer, are associated with the consumption of dairy products from cows treated with rBGH.

PINK Cause Marketing

4 September 2010 - The Pink Cause Marketing is getting underway once again.  I just received a spam from a PR firm about a massage clinic in Seattle that would give $15 from each massage to the Komen Foundation.  I wrote the fellow back and explained a few things about the Politics of Pink.

Here at Natural Health News we have well over 3 dozen articles on this topic. Here is one and here is another...

Our friends at Think Before You Pink have a great amount of information that you can use to learn more.  You can also sign on to their petition.

Please educate yourself, and consider thermography and ultrasound with breast self-exam as much better, safer, and more effective than breast cancer causing mammograms. (Many posts here and at leaflady.org)

Stay tuned, we'll be adding more as the madness gears up and the season continues through October.

from Natural Health News - October 2009
This month the sale flyer from my local market includes an half-page ad from the GoodCook's "Hope" line. GoodCook is a line of kitchen items including the Pink kitchen ware set you can get free if you purchase specific items manufactured by Proctor & Gamble.

Not too far of a stretch from the Yoplait lids campaign, just recall that P & G manufactures TIDE and Actonel (the risky bisphosphonate osteoporosis drug that's of late been hawked for breast cancer).

Seems to me there is another cause for concern because part of their "free" set is a pink non-stick skillet.

The problem with this pink skillet is not that it is pink, but that it is coated with aluminum oxide*** and then a layer of PFOA(Perfluorooctanoic Acid), a known carcinogen manufactured by DuPont.
PFOA stands for Perfluorooctanoic Acid, a man-made chemical which does not occur naturally in the environment. PFOA (also known as "C8") is used by companies, such as DuPont (Teflon®, Stainmaster®, Scotchguard®), to make fluoro-polymers for use in non-stick cookware and all-weather clothing.

Recently, scientists have found great concern, however, as levels of PFOA have been commonly found in many in humans across the globe and concerns abound about how exposure to PFOA could affect people's health. Thus the reason for the creation of this website. Our goal as scientists and concerned citizens is to both better understand this important chemical and to assess the possible risks and concerns of the global exposure to this fluoride-containing, unhealthy substance.

Surely it's up to you to decide if you want to support advertising in the name of a cause that has underlying concerns about just how healthy these free items might be.
Request a copy of our Breast Health Awareness Fact Sheet About the Risks of Mammography with your donation to our work. We aren't on the Pink Lid donation list although we've tried many times.

Women Kept in the Dark
"CANCER SCREENING 'BLIGHTS TEN LIVES FOR EVERY ONE SAVED"

1000s of women have unnecessary surgery, chemotherapy & radiotherapy as a result of routine mammogram breast cancer screening, doctors warned in The UK's Times on 19 Feb. 09.

For each woman whose life is saved, 10 healthy ones needlessly receive mastectomies & other treatment, a study found.

Experts said the NHS should do more to warn women of the high risk of a false positive.

23 doctors, surgeons, academics & health specialists claimed on 19 Feb. that "There is evidence to show that up to half of all cancers & their precursor lesions found by screening might not lead to any harm to the woman. Yet if found at screening, they potentially label the woman as a cancer patient: She may then be subjected to the unnecessary traumas of surgery, radiotherapy & perhaps chemotherapy, as well as suffer the potential for serious social & psychological problems."

Dr. Paul Pharoah, Cancer Research UK Senior Clinical Research Fellow, Cambridge Uni, & Prof. Michael Baum, Emeritus Prof. of Surgery, University College London, were among the experts who wrote this letter to "The Times."

They said none of the invitations for screening come close to telling the truth & that women are being unintentionally manipulated into attending.

What it is really about: Issues in Health Care

Yesterday I noticed an article tying asthma inhalers to prostate cancer.  It made me think of a fellow I know who is dealing with both. Yes, he was a stress smoker.  What's worse is that he's fought repeated bouts of pneumonia over the past year or so, and been in the hospital several times.  I just wonder if the allopaths treating him have ever taken a look at the increased risk of pneumonia associated with the SNRI drug they gave him several years ago fore stress.  Surely this is a good example, while not his complete story, of the politics of health and how it increases cost, while seemingly lacking benefit.

Now comes this article - Cancer is the world's costliest disease

No wonder! Cancer is an industry. And just like any corporation it has to do what ever it can to protect the bottom line; survivors are coincidental.

Then this morning I was perusing my twitter account during the small allotment of minutes I allow.  I found this gem and a new follower, with ease via a retweet from another health watcher.
Truth is that the politics of health care has been driving up costs for multiple decades, not just because of breast cancer, but it is a major driving cost center.  One with little done in the way of prevention and education, but then this kind of approach, from the heart of public health, fails the corporate bottom line in PhRMA and Big Insurance.
Change is up to you.  Engaging in prevention is up to you.  Demanding answers to your questions is up to you as is advocating for your own best health.  And access to natural care approaches for cancer care should not be withheld!
Certainly if you are a follower of Natural Health News you know we take a different view of Pink Cause marketing, Races for the "Cure", and the continual promotion of breast-cancer-causing mammography.  Just use our search function to learn why.
